MacCarthy (spr. mäckkahrtĭ), Justin, irischer Schriftsteller und Politiker, geb. 22. Nov. 1830 zu Cork, lebt in London, seit 1879 Parlamentsmitglied (Radikaler und irischer Nationalist); schrieb: »History of our own times« (5 Bde., 1880-97; deutsch, Bd. 1, 1881), »History of the four Georges« (Bd. 1-4, 1884-1901), »The reign of queen Anne« (2 Bde., 1902), Romane etc. – Sein Sohn Justin Huntly M., geb. 1860, seit 1884 Parlamentsmitglied, schrieb zahlreiche Gedichte, Romane, Dramen und Übersetzungen.
